Pumpkin Run at Jack Abrams School

Jack Abrams Intermediate School is on a fitness campaign this year. The plan is to organize a monthly healthy and fun activity during recess periods. The initiative produced the school’s first pumpkin run late last week.

Fifth grader Grace Curran and her mother, Lisa helped Principal Mary Stokkers nail down details of the event. The Curran women developed an idea that centered on “making friends one lap at a time.”

The youngsters were asked to complete four laps around the playground area and “were encouraged to find out four new and interesting facts about their friends,” Ms. Curran explained. “The children had a terrific time making new friends, one lap at a time.”

The Huntington School District’s wellness drive is slowly reaching into just about every aspect of school life, from healthier food choices in cafeterias to a greater emphasis on physical fitness in physical education classes.

The Jack Abrams School community embraced the pumpkin run. “The students walked or ran with someone different each lap and found out something about them that they didn't know,” Mrs. Stokkers said. “They could get a pumpkin charm if they could tell me something new they learned about a classmate."

Elementary school students are so energetic and seem to be always up for a new challenge. The pumpkin run was something different and something fun. “It was incredible,” Mrs. Stokkers said. “They were so excited to find other friends that were born in the same hospital or played the same sport. They were all smiles.”

Planning is already underway for next month’s event, which not surprisingly will be a “turkey trot.”
