Casey Scully Enjoys Fantastic Freshman Season
Casey Scully’s freshman season with the Iona College lacrosse team ended in splendid fashion as she scored five goals to lead the Gaels to an 18-7 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over visiting Siena College on Senior Day.
Scully, a 5’6 midfielder, graduated last June from Huntington High School after starring on the Blue Devil soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams. Known for a scrappy, hard-nosed style of play, she started all 15 games for Iona this spring, scoring 26 goals and notching two assists.
“The competition is definitely tough and more physical than in high school and the pace of the game is a lot quicker,” Scully said about college play. She fired off 60 shots this spring, including 46 on goal and racked up a scoring percentage of .767. She also scooped up 26 ground balls, drew 22 charges and caused opponents to turn the ball over nine times.
Despite Scully’s fine play, Iona finished with a 5-10 mark. “I was pretty disappointed with how our season went, we expected to do way better then we actually did,” she said. “But, I love school. I'm having a great time here and made some awesome friends.”
Scully hasn’t determined what her academic major will be. But, she is happy with her decision to go to the New Rochelle school. “I really like Iona,” she said.
