Top Ten Head to Suffolk Math Tournament
Ten Huntington students will represent the district at the Suffolk County Math Tournament this spring in an individual and team problem-solving competition that will pit the group against foes from 22 other school districts.
The event is coordinated by members of the Suffolk County Math Teacher’s Association and hosted by SUNY Stony Brook. It brings together many of the top young minds in the region.
Representing Huntington will be two teams of talented sixth graders, including Jack Abrams Intermediate School students Leigh Anderson, Grady Koepele, Justin Loturco, Suzanne Petryk and Kylie Palmer and Woodhull Intermediate School youngsters Caitlin Knowles, Elizabeth Corrao, Charles Beers, Leah Lutz and Brandon Mendez.
The contingent represents the top ten Math Olympiad students from the two buildings. “Selection was based on the scores earned by each student in the Math Olympiad meets held this school year,” explained Maryann Daly, the district’s Math Olympiad coach.
The formal competition will be held in Stony Brook’s Student Activities Center ballroom. Tournament questions will be prepared by Math Olympiad staff members. “The questions will be reviewed in a group setting and prizes will be awarded to both high scoring individuals and teams,” said Mrs. Daly, who is also the SEARCH chairperson and a teacher in the program.
Last year, Huntington Intermediate School (the predecessor to Jack Abrams School) earned runner-up team honors in the tournament and Christian Jamison won a trophy as one of the top individual contestants.
