BEAR Day at Woodhull School
Motivating and inspiring kids is one of the keys to successfully educating them. The teachers and support staff at Woodhull Intermediate School know this and organized the second annual BEAR Day with it in mind.
Held earlier this month, BEAR (Be Excited About Reading) Day brought parents and staff members together to share their excitement about reading by sharing short stories and other literary works with Woodhull’s 500 students.
“To kickoff the event, classes created large banners that were hung throughout the building of their favorite books and authors,” teacher David Benjamin said. There were even bulletin board displays of suggested “top picks” by classes for summer reading.
Organizers agree that BEAR Day was a “huge success” with participants gathered in small groups around the building and outside on the spacious grounds. “As you walked around, you could hear books read in both English and Spanish, children asking questions and the meaningful exchange of conversation among students about the book,” Mr. Benjamin said.
A parent/literacy committee of eleven teachers and parents coordinated the event, which was enjoyed by students across all grade levels. Is a third year of BEAR Day in the offing in 2010? You can bet on it.
