Creative Crafts Classes Donate Blue Devil Mural
Students in art teacher Lorraine Costello’s creative crafts classes are leaving behind a stunning glass mosaic Blue Devil mural, which has been permanently mounted in the gym lobby at Huntington High School.
The mural was a cooperative project involving over 40 students. Each of them completed a 4 x 4 tile that were joined together to form a giant Blue Devil, which is the school’s athletic logo and nickname.
“Every year I try to have the students complete a mural so that we can beautify our district and community,” Ms. Costello said. “This year the kids expressed that they would love to show school spirit, so we came up with the Blue Devil.”
Students participating in the project included Julio Aparicio, Hailey Borders, Joseph Bosco, Pat Brady, Elisabeth Burke, Patrick Donegan, Anne Coffey, Melvin Cortes, Kevin Feliciano, Jessica Flores, Sarah Gordon, Frank Marriot, Lori Messina, Melissa Cartagena, Eric Ferber, Tye Jamison, Petros Kalodukas, Kevin Maier, Maria Miranda-Morales, Thomas Mulligan, Brian Pechar, Carla Rivera, Colleen Wright, Laura Zenzerovich, Samantha Bindrim, Danielle Cerezo, Jack Cutrone, Keith Dillon, Maria Jaramillo, Sarah Kulchinsky, Luis Lopez, James Murphy, Jeff Navarro, Chris Palms, Gianna Puello, Meybelin Rodriguez, Stephen Root, Nick Saputo, Sarah-Kate Smith, Alisa Sosa, Nyda Figuera and Michelle Waaland.
“Each student completed a glass mosaic tile which was then mounted onto a board and later grouted,” Ms. Costello said. “You can see how each tile reflects a student’s artistic mosaic style, but together makes a whole unified image. The artwork also reflects the cultural diversity of Huntington and though we come from many different backgrounds and cultures together we make one beautiful picture.”
District carpenter Anthony Berdot custom framed and installed the mural. “His help is greatly appreciated,” Ms. Costello said.
