School Officials Study Regents Results
Preliminary results are in for Huntington High School students who took social studies and English Regents exams during the 2008/09 school year. District officials are poring over the scores and developing strategies to drive them even higher.
On the U.S. History Regents, 92 percent of all students taking the test passed it. The passing rate for the Global History Regents was 85 percent overall and 95 percent for general education students.
Joseph Leavy, the district’s director of humanities who supervises the English and social studies departments, said the passing rate for students taking the English Regents in January 2009 stood at 82 percent, “but when we add to this the other students in the cohort, who took the exam in June 2008 as 10th grade honors students, the passing rate for the entire cohort moves to 87 percent.”
Mr. Leavy said results from the June 2009 English Regents included a 100 percent passing rate for the 71 10th grade honors students taking the exam. Of this group, 64 of the teenagers achieved “mastery” by scoring 85 percent or higher.
J. Taylor Finley Middle School 8th graders taking the New York State Social Studies Assessment also did well, with students achieving a passing rate of 87 percent. Mr. Leavy complimented both teachers and students for their “hard work” that led to the fine showing.
