New Fashion Design Course on Tap
As Huntington High School’s fashion design program continues to generate a high degree of enthusiasm and interest, a new course is on the horizon this fall to bring students to the next level.
Fashion Design and Illustration III has been developed by art teachers Kristin Singer and Amy Worth, who teach in the fashion program. “This course provides third year fashion students with the opportunity to explore the business and marketing side of the fashion industry as well as prepare a complete portfolio of fashion illustrations and sewn designs,” according to the course proposal submitted to the district’s Educational Development Committee.
In addition to the business and marketing side of fashion, the units of study for the course will include computer technology in fashion, contemporary fashion illustration, merchandising and the basics of fashion publications. Students will also design a mini-collection and help plan and produce
The rationale given for the creation of the new course states the class is needed “to provide advanced fashion students with an opportunity to explore real world applications in this area of interest.” Fashion III students will be scheduled in the same class as those in Fashion II, but they will be given advanced assignments.
“Students will design for both mass and niche, combining creativity with marketability and practice production planning from both a local and global perspective,” according to the course curriculum.
There is no additional cost associated with the course since it will run in conjunction with an existing one. After the EDC approved the new course proposal, Huntington School Board members gave the green light to it and students were able to register for it.
