Huntington School Briefs

 

Maria Romero has been appointed as a probationary teacher in the Huntington School District and assignment to Washington Primary School, where she will teach a kindergarten dual language program class. 

 

Ms. Romero graduated from St. Francis College in 1992 with a B.A. degree in social studies.  She obtained a master’s degree in January 2002 at Adelphi University in elementary and bilingual education.

 

Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Romero worked at Paul Robeson Intermediate School and MS 203 in the Bronx from Sept. 1992 to June 2007 as a bilingual and ESL teacher of grades 6-8.  Last year she worked at ABGS Middle School in Hempstead as a match curriculum coach and grade six/SIFE teacher.

 

Huntington school officials reviewed 21 applications and conducted eight interviews before recommending Ms. Romero for appointment.

Summer Registration Continues

The Huntington School District is continuing to register new students for the start of the school year in September.  The office of student registration will be open in July on any Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.  Registration in August will be by appointment only.

 

The office is located in room 103 in the district’s administrative complex located at 50 Tower Street in Huntington Station (a side entrance to Jack Abrams Intermediate School on Lowndes Avenue).

Probationary Appointment for Chelsea Jablon

After working as a leave replacement music teacher at Jack Abrams and Woodhull intermediate schools, Chelsea Jablon has been given a probationary appointment.  She will work a Jack Abrams School and Jefferson Primary School.

 

Ms. Jablon earned a Bachelor of Science degree in music education at Hofstra University in May 2007.  She is studying for a master’s degree at Hofstra University.  She completed her student teaching requirements at MacArthur High School in Levittown and Marion Street Elementary School in Lynbrook.

New Latin Teacher

Robert Curtin has been hired as a part-time Latin teacher at J. Taylor Finley Middle School and Huntington High School.  Mr. Curtin obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees at New York University in 2008 and 2009, respectively. 

 

Mr. Curtin completed his student teaching requirements this past spring at North Shore Middle School/High School.  His Bachelor of Arts degree is in classical languages; Latin and Greek and his master’s is in foreign language/Latin grades 7-12.

 

District officials reviewed seven applications and interviewed three candidates before recommending Mr. Curtin for appointment. 

School Board Meetings

The Huntington School Board has scheduled public meetings on Mon. Aug. 3 and Mon. Aug. 24.  Both meetings will be held in the J. Taylor Finley Middle School large group instruction room and be gaveled to order at 7 p.m. 

Finley Student Awards

Cissy Frost worked for many years as an aide at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.  After she passed away prematurely, members of the Frost family instituted the Cissy Frost Friendship Award.  This year’s award was presented to Finley eighth grader Monica Casabona.

Huntington Alum is Engaged

Kevin Porter, a 1998 graduate of Huntington High School, is engaged to Vanita Jain, of Concord, New Hampshire.  The couple is planning an August wedding. 

 

Mr. Porter, who is currently the director of lending at the Housing Development Fund in Stamford, Connecticut, earned an undergraduate degree at Bates College, where he met Ms. Vain.  He obtained a master’s in economics from the New School for Social Research in 2005.

 

Ms. Vain is also a graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and is finishing a residency in internal medicine at Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut.

 

Mr. Porter, who was the recording secretary of the Class of 1998, won the Robert Cushman Award as a Huntington senior.  It honors a man who served as the high school principal from 1950 through the 1968 school year.
