Huntington JV Boys’ Lax Compiles 14-1 Mark
Is this a championship team in the making? It could be. The Huntington junior varsity boys’ lacrosse squad won 14-of-15 games, putting on impressive displays of offensive firepower and aggressive defense week-after-week. The Blue Devils scored in double figures nine times during the season.
Coached by Anthony Troffa, Jimmy Creighton and Dave Wilson, Huntington was a well-oiled machine. “This team was hard-working, well-disciplined and had an enormous amount of talent,” Troffa said. “They all contributed in some way and we look forward to seeing them further develop in the future.”
Huntington was led by Jimmy Roselle, Jack Castelli, Conor Reilly, Tyre Brown, Jack Cutrone, Alex Gennaro, Jack Forster and Kenny Stropoli. The roster was filled with experienced and skilled players, providing depth that few teams could match.
Roselle, a sophomore attack, led the Blue Devils with 40 goals. “He has a natural instinct to find the goal,” Troffa said. Cutrone, a freshman midfielder, also sparkled and is expected to play a key role in the program over the coming years. Stropoli, a sophomore, shined in goal.
Castelli, another sophomore attack, was the Blue Devils’ leader in points, frequently setting up teammates and notching assists. “Jack is one of the most unselfish players and always finds the open man,” Troffa said. Brown, a freshman midfielder, is a face-off specialist who Troffa thinks “will be incredible” next year. Forster, a freshman and Gennaro, a sophomore, were defensive anchors. Reilly, a freshman long stick midfielder scooped up the most ground balls and led the team in takeaways.
A 7-4 victory over Cold Spring Harbor was the highlight of the season. “We were mentally prepared, came out strong and never let up,” Troffa said. “It was one of our best all-around games.”
The Huntington JV was a gifted bunch. “This was one of the best groups of players that we have worked with,” Troffa said. “They all had terrific attitudes and were dedicated.” The team was able to utilize the new turf field the town installed at Manor Park and it helped the Blue Devils
“It was awesome having Manor Field,” Troffa said. “It allowed us to always have practice and be productive. It also kept our morale high knowing that we would always have successful practices.”
Looking ahead to the 2010 campaign, Troffa anticipates P.J. Beach, Phil Cadorette and Spencer Colwin as the team’s top attackmen. Teddy Lyons, Brad Dwyer and Mike Marchetta “should form a solid nucleus at the midfield,” the coach said. John McCarthy, James Neary and Brandon Fiordilisi should make for a strong defensive unit. Mike Rasco is expected to return to the goalie spot after being sidelined by a hand injury last spring.
Next year’s goals are simple: “Continue winning, developing and getting everyone in games,” Troffa said.
