K-1 Saturday Academy Honors Students

They probably didn’t even have a complete grasp on the hullabaloo surrounding them, but the youngsters in the Huntington School District’s K-1 Saturday Academy program were recognized for their participation in weekly classes aimed at strengthening their skills in a variety of crucial areas.

The students were all kindergarten and first grade English Language Learners.  The program was based at Huntington High School and ran every Saturday morning for two hours from October to May.  Carmen Kasper, the district’s director of foreign language, ESL and bilingual programs, said the children “eagerly participated in classes that were designed to give them additional support in early literacy skills with an emphasis on oral language development, vocabulary, and comprehension.”

On the final day of classes, students were recognized for their participation in the program with a certificate and small token of appreciation for a job well done during a ceremony in the School Heritage Museum. Ms. Kasper said “this program would not have been successful without the efforts of all the staff who were involved.” Those individuals included Angela Berner, Jessie Brenner, Glenn Edwards, Nancy Giorgos, Claudia Gonzalez-Buttler, Suzanne Knoerzer, Lucy Marotta, Sarah Metcalf, Kimberly Murray, Donna Marie O’Shaunnesey, Myriam Palacio, Carolina Rivas, and Soraya Triessl.

Huntington has been relentless in helping its students succeed academically.  The weekend K-1 ELL program is part of this focused effort.  “The teachers delivered lessons that were interactive and lively,” Ms. Kasper said.  “The additional support on Saturday, along with the daily instruction at their respective schools, has boosted the literacy levels of the youngsters who participated on a regular basis.”
