Finley French Students Post Stunning Results

Five students at J. Taylor Finley Middle School placed in the top ten in Suffolk County in this year’s national French contest. In all, 24 Finley seventh and eighth graders took the prestigious national exam, said their teacher, Dr. Gina Marie Trigian-Molvaut.

Officially known as Le Grand Concours, the contest is sponsored by the American Assn. of Teachers of French. Tens of thousands of students from all 50 states and many foreign countries participate in the written exam, which is a premier event for those in grades 1-2 who are studying French.

At the seventh grade level in Suffolk, Finley’s Kathryn Ingle placed eighth for students learning French as a second language and Joellen Ciede was ninth. Marc Feldman finished second among students coming from francophone families. At the eighth grade level, Conor Byrne came in fourth place and Scout Zieger finished tenth in the second language learner category. Nationally, Mr. Byrne earned seventh place and Mr. Feldman finished eighth.

“We are proud of all these students for their efforts and performance on Le Grand Concours,” Dr. Trigian-Molvaut said. “We would like to commend all these students for their success.”

Just taking the challenging exam is seen as an accomplishment because it attracts many of the best and brightest young minds in the country. In addition to the top performing students, Finley seventh graders Hector Alvarado, Justin Engelsher, Alexandria Mandriota, Gabriella Mandriota, Benjamin Nicodem, and Victoria Smith and eighth graders Scarlet Bardales, Claire Beach, Lauren Bialkowski, Monica Casabona, Natalia Chaney, Alexandra Grabowski, Lucinda Gulino, Lawrence McGill, Pauline McGlone, Jennifer Polster, Robert Scott, Eric Sze and Raynisha Witherspoon participated in the highly regarded contest.
