Huntington Football Schedule Released
The Huntington High School varsity football team’s tentative schedule has been posted on the website of Section XI, the governing body for interscholastic athletics in Suffolk County.
The Blue Devils will open the season at Islip on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. and then travel to Deer Park for a game on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m. Huntington will then host four straight home contests, hosting Eastport-South Manor (Sat. Sept. 26 at 1:30 p.m.), Kings Park (Sat. Oct. 3 at 1:30 p.m.), Sayville (Sat. Oct. 10 at 2 p.m.) and Harborfields (Sat. Oct. 17 at 2 p.m.) The team goes back on the road for its final two games, visiting Half Hollow Hills West (Sat. Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.) and Miller Place (Sat. Oct. 31 at 1:30 p.m.)
Steve Muller, who last fall took a leave of absence for family reasons, is returning as the Blue Devils’ head coach. In 13 seasons, he has a career mark of 82-40. Ron Wilson, who served as interim head coach last year, is returning to his previous position with the junior varsity team.
Huntington finished the 2008 campaign with a 4-5 record. The team’s leading returnee next fall will be junior running back/linebacker Calvin Bollar. Last year he rushed 96 times for 664 yards and six touchdowns, hauled in 31 receptions for 421 yards and five touchdowns and completed 30-of-40 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns.
“Calvin is small in stature, but packs a mighty big punch,” Wilson said. “He’s an exceptional athlete with limitless potential. It’s great to see him perform. He’s going to be great for Huntington football the next couple of years if he stays humble and focused.”
The Blue Devils will also look to Dan Plant, Pete Knutson, Louie Lopez, Richardo Caballero, Will Coffey, Wayne McCloud, Alex Gennaro, C.J. Herrington and Dante Allen to play big roles on both sides of the ball.
Last year’s junior varsity team went 7-1 and many of the players on that squad are expected to make a successful jump to the varsity this fall.
