Blue Devils Win State Scholar-Athlete Awards
Four fall varsity athletic teams at Huntington High School have earned coveted New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards based on the grade point averages of respective team members.
The NYSPHSAA program requires a set number of participants from each team to have their GPAs averaged. Higher GPAs can be used offset lower ones. The team’s GPA must be at least 90 to win the award. Coaches nominate their teams and guidance offices must certify the grades and transcripts submitted to the state office.
Blue Devil boys’ volleyball players Ryan Greenhill, Justin Greenidge, Thomas Hardardt, Mitchell Johnson, John McCarthy, Max Smoller, David Stillman and Michael Sullivan compiled a joint GPA of 91.52, earning Huntington a Scholar Athlete Award in that sport.
The Huntington girls’ soccer team also won a state award after Michaela Acton, Cristina Badalamenti, Michaela Brown, Alyson Coleman, Sarah Ehrman, Carolyn Fante, Lauren Gerbavsits, Kelsey Iwanicki, Meredith McCourt, Lori Messina, Tara Narine and Allison Thompson compiled a joint GPA of 91.31.
The Blue Devil boys’ cross country squad was honored after Thomas Boisclair, Adam Cerini, Ryan Dyckes, John Ferraiolo, Andrew Funk, Alden Wolf and Harrison Young compiled a 90.82 joint GPA.
Not to be outdone by its male counterparts, Huntington’s girls’ cross country won the school’s fourth state Scholar-Athlete Award of the fall season when Wilmarie Aviles, Nicole Caputo, Kerri-Ann Giambruno, Amber Lindner, Gabriella Mitchell, Margaret Petryk and Celine Takekoshi combined for a GPA of 90.31.
