Greenhill Leads Blue Devil Boys’ Volleyball
It might be difficult to ascertain from the team’s final record, but the Blue Devil boys’ volleyball squad made progress this fall, despite a 1-15 mark.
Coached by Danny Contopoulos and Chris Mooney, Huntington was captained by seniors Ryan Greenhill, Max Smoller and Dan Smith. The 12-player roster included eight underclassmen.
“We made lots of progress this season,” Contopoulos said. “We began playing harder and figuring things out!” The Blue Devils were led by Greenhill, who earned All-Division honors and junior Kevin Venturino and sophomore John McCarthy, who were both honorable mention All-Division.
Greenhill, a talented setter, compiled 78 “kills” and contributed 124 assists. “Ryan hustles,” Contopoulos said. “He gives 100 percent on every play. His competitive nature is great. I wish I had a team full of Ryan’s.”
McCarthy, an outside hitter, turned in 84 “kills” and established himself as a player on the cusp of being something very special. “John is really starting to develop as a volleyball player,” Contopoulos said. “He has a world of potential and can only get better. I look forward to seeing him develop.”
One dark cloud this season involved the lack of any freshmen coming out for the team. Contopoulos obviously does not want a repeat of that next year. He hopes to get potential players interested in the sport at a younger age and continue the overall improvement in Huntington’s play.
