Finley Boys’ Soccer is Perfect
Perfection is hard to come by, especially in the sports world, but the J. Taylor Finley Middle School boys’ soccer team achieved it. The Falcons closed out their fall campaign with a spotless 10-0 mark, outscoring their opponents 64-10.
Head coach Matt Perlongo called his large 33-player squad a “great group” and said they were “fun to work with.” The skilled roster overcame the expected bumps in the road along the way, besting several outstanding opponents and never letting down.
Finley was led by eighth grade midfielder Ricky Velasquez, who led the team with 18 goals, eighth grade defensive maestro Alex Castillo and seventh grade forwards Brendan Homire and Josue Canales.
The Falcons, who were captained by Castillo, Nicholas Tonks and Jesse Feldman-Stein, were a solid and fundamentally sound team. The team had all the pieces necessary to make it through an entire season untouched.
In Velasquez and Castillo, Finley had two exceptional players that any coach would covet. Perlongo, who was assisted by Chris Vitiello, called Velasquez an “amazing player” with “skills far beyond this age group.” The coach said Castillo is an “excellent defensive player and team leader.”
Canales is clearly an up-and-coming star. Perlongo described him as an “explosive young player” with a “great shot and speed.” Homire, a smart-playing quick forward “is always pushing himself to get better,” the coach said about his other young stand-out.
With 13 current seventh graders eligible to return next fall, Finley’s dominance in Suffolk boys’ soccer might not be over yet, although Perlongo will need to fill the goalie position.
