Unlimited Potential for Blue Devil Girls’ Track

Can Debra Cheskes harness the unlimited potential possessed by the Huntington girls’ winter track team? Well, the Blue Devil head coach is certainly going to try. The squad features of mix of returning athletes and newcomers and appears to have a nice balance.

Among the returnees is Molly Aceri, who is coming back as Huntington’s leading thrower. Cheskes said that Arceri is “motivated to place high in the league.” Christina Badalamenti, who soars in the jumping events, also returns. She was an all-league long jumper last winter and is also strong in the triple jump.

Standout middle distance runner Emilie Pugliese is expected to make a run at qualifying for the county championship meet and all-league triple jumper Hannah Helrich is sure to make plenty of noise after being the state’s top eighth grader in the event last year.

Cheskes has her work cut out molding the 34-member team into a winner since the young roster is filled predominately with freshmen and sophomores. Yet, Huntington has “unlimited potential to harness” and the coach is working to “shape them into a top group.”

Key team members also include lightning fast sprinter Dania Merilan, impressive hurdler/sprinter Alexandra Krapf and naturally talented distance runner Celine Takekoshi, who turned in several eye-popping performances during the fall cross country season.

The Blue Devils are captained by Pugliese, Arceri, Badalamenti and Krapf.
