Woodhull Students Experience Hands-on Lesson
Woodhull Intermediate School fourth grade dual language program students worked together to prepare eight apple pies that were later donated to the Helping Hand Rescue Mission for distribution to needy families in the community.
Teachers Vincenza Caruso and Soraya Triessl provided the youngsters with an opportunity to mix the ingredients as classroom moms helped move things along. When all was said and done, a set of delicious looking and generally visually appealing pies had been created.
The moms took the pies home with them and popped them in the oven, returning later in the afternoon to show the fourth graders the finished products. “They were all excited to see the pies baked and smelling good,” Mrs. Caruso said. The pies were then sent off to the Helping Hand Mission in Huntington Station for use in its anti-hunger efforts.
“The students in the classes had been talking about the importance of Thanksgiving and understanding that we have so much to be thankful for everyday,” Mrs. Caruso said. “Then we focused on the fact that there are many families out there who don’t have the things that we have and this was a nice way for us to contribute to our community.”
