Woodhull School Drive Collects 862 lbs. of Food
There’s nothing like a good contest to get the competitive juices flowing and it certainly did the trick at Woodhull Intermediate School, where students collected 862 pounds of food during a Thanksgiving drive.
Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students vied against each other, placing items in specially marked boxes designated for each grade. Parents pitched in, too, making deposits into the boxes each day.
The goal of the drive was to collect 500 pounds of food. The results shattered original hopes. “Next year our goal will be 1,000 pounds,” Principal Jarrett Stein said. With our PTA, parents, students and teachers, I'm sure we'll exceed that goal.”
At the end of the week, the items were sorted to allow for nutritional balance. The food was delivered to 18 needy Woodhull School families, helping each of them to enjoy a happy holiday with loved ones.
“The families were so appreciative to receive the food and couldn't stop thanking us,” Mr. Stein said. “The sixth grade brought in the most food in total after the fourth grade came out of the gate quick. On the morning announcements I congratulated the students, faculty and staff and told them how proud I was to be their principal.”
