Jack Scott went down fighting but his Union College men’s soccer team was nipped in overtime by Hobart College in the Liberty League championship game.
Scott, a 2006 graduate of Huntington High School, scored his fourth goal of the season with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, but fourth-seeded Union (11-6-2) couldn’t hold off second-seeded Hobart (14-3-2) in overtime.
This fall, Scott, a 6’1 forward, started eight of the 18 games in which he appeared.
New Coach
Ed Lein, a 1993 graduate of Huntington High School, is returning to his alma mater as the junior varsity boys’ basketball coach after being approved by the Huntington School Board.
Mr. Lein earned a B.A. degree in behavioral and social sciences at the University of Maryland in 1997. He later obtained an M.S. degree in secondary education at CUNY-Queens College in 2004. He has been employed as a social studies teacher at Half Hollow Hills High School East since 2003 and has coached there on the freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels.
Hansen Award
The Huntington football program dates to 1895, but during that time only two players have earned the coveted Hansen Award, presented annually to Suffolk’s best player. The honorees include Darren Ward (1987) and John Paci (1989). Ward initially went to Rutgers but left after a year. Paci played at starred at quarterback for Indiana, setting an NCAA record for a 99-yard touchdown pass. He later played professionally in both the NFL and the World League of American Football in Europe.
Marinello Steps Aside
Longtime Huntington wrestling coach Mike Marinello has decided to step back from his position as head coach of the Finley Middle School mat team. The Huntington School Board has previously appointed him to coach during the upcoming season, but Mr. Marinello changed his plans for family related reasons. Finley’s other wrestling coach, Louis R. Giani, will be returning. A replacement for Mr. Marinello has not been appointed yet.
Shannon at Lehigh
Former Huntington lacrosse star Rob Shannon is a senior at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He majoring in finance and carrying a psychology minor. He’s currently investigating a possible career in the banking and financial securities industry. On the Lehigh campus, he plays club lacrosse and is a member of the finance club.
Volleyball Players Earn Awards
Huntington volleyball player Ryan Greenhill earned a spot on the Suffolk All-Division team for his fine play this past fall. Teammates Max Smoller and Justin Greenidge were named to the Academic Elite Team, which consists of the county’s top 12 players by grade point average. The awards were formally presented last week.
Essential Surfing
Many high school sports fans consider the New York State Sportswriters’ Assn. website to be an essential stop during their daily internet surfing. The site, which can be found at www.newyorksportswriters.org, contains weekly rankings, daily links to interesting high school sports stories found in the pages of papers across the state, an informative blog and much more.
Sair is Solid
Dom Sair turned in a very solid season for the SUNY College at Cortland football team. After the Red Dragons converted the 2006 Huntington alum from fullback to tailback he responded with a series of stellar performances, including a string of 100-plus yard efforts.
This fall the 6’0, 235 lb. Sair rushed154 times for 785 yards (5.1 average) and 13 touchdowns. He scored four touchdowns against both Buffalo and Brockport. He longest run of the year went for 51-yards. He also caught three passes for 20 yards and returned a kick-off for 13 yards.
Cortland finished the season with a 7-4 mark after dropping its final two games to Ithaca and St. John Fisher. Sair is majoring in business at Cortland.
As a Blue Devil football player Sair was named first-team all-state at linebacker as a senior, following an MVP effort in the Long Island championship game. He played football at C.W. Post as a freshman before transferring to Cortland.
