Flower Hill Gives Back to the Community
Flower Hill School students on three different grade levels came together to give something back to the community when they made pies, breads and muffins in their classrooms and then donated the tasty items to the Helping Hand Rescue Mission for distribution to needy local families.
Teachers Lisa Baldanza, Veronica Quinlan and Claudia Mingin worked with their students and both parent and grandparent volunteers on the service project. Students created appealing pumpkin breads, corn muffins, cranberry breads and much more.
Mrs. Baldanza, who knows a thing or two about good food, was pleased with the apple and pumpkin pies whipped up by the youngsters in her first grade class. The group measured and mixed and even cracked eggs.
“It is a wonderful project that I have done with my classes for the past couple of years,” said Mrs. Baldanza, who came to Flower Hill from Washington School. “The children are able to understand the gift of giving and how wonderful it feels to give to someone less fortunate than they are. It is a memory that my students will take with them.”
Mrs. Mingin, a first grade teacher and Mrs. Quinlan, a third grade teacher said the project incorporated math by utilizing measuring spoons and cups and language arts by following directions. The teachers said their students “had a wonderful experience participating in this giving project.”
“It also tied into our social studies curriculum throughout the entire first, second and third grades,” Mrs. Baldanza said in noting the opportunity to teach about the Pilgrims, early America and that first Thanksgiving. Besides adding to the educational experience of participating students, the activity also helped bring together different segments of the Flower Hill School community.
The folks at the Helping Hand Rescue Mission were thrilled to get the pies and quickly identified families in need of food for the Thanksgiving holiday.
