Jack Abrams School Collects Food for the Hungry
With hunger being a real issue in the community, Jack Abrams Intermediate School students took it upon themselves to do something about it and brighten the lives of less fortunate families. The youngsters collected more than 1,500 items in all and donated dozens of boxes and crates stuffed with goods weighing hundreds of pounds.
Sponsored by HSLO, the Husky Student Leadership Organization, the food drive benefited the efforts of the Huntington Station-based Helping Hand Rescue Mission.
HSLO members decided to organize a Husky-themed contest based on the most food collected. Each class was assigned to one of three teams: Team Denali, Team Kenai, and Team Yukon. The teams raced to see which team would reach their goal of 300 food items collected. In the end all three teams met and exceeded their goal as students learned the value of giving as well as a little about Alaskan dog sledding!
"For the past two years, one student has taken it upon themselves to go door to door with their parents asking for donations,” said Scott Armyn, who serves as a HSLO faculty advisor along with Paul Esposito. “This year the generosity was contagious. Parents were coming with carloads of donations given to them by neighbors and friends.” Fifth grader Dianna Schmitt took the lead this fall and hundreds of other students contributed food and non-perishable goods to make the drive one of the best in memory.
