Trustees Consider School Naming Policy

Huntington School Board members recently discussed a proposed new policy related to the naming of district facilities. Trustee Christine Bene explained the purpose of the policy and its practical application.

Trustees took up the matter during their public meeting on Monday, August 3 in the J. Taylor Finley Middle School large group instruction room. The session was attended by a crowd of about three dozen students, parents, teachers and administrators.

In recent years trustees have renamed two facilities. The Huntington High School gym was renamed in honor of longtime physical education and head wrestling coach Louis D. Giani, who is a 1953 Huntington graduate and 1960 Olympian. Huntington Intermediate School was renamed in honor of retired teacher and principal Jack Abrams, who currently serves as curator of the School Heritage Museum and has been involved for 54 years.

The proposed new policy reads:

“When the Board of Education determines that is necessary or desirable to name or rename a school district facility, the Board of Education may appoint an advisory committee to suggest names of facilities for the Board’s review. Such a committee would be advisory only and the Board of Education will make all decisions regarding the naming or renaming of any District facility. The Board, in its sole discretion, may accept or reject any and all committee suggestions without restriction. The advisory committee may include members of the District’s residents, administrative staff, teaching staff and student body.”

The first reading of the proposed took place August 3. The second reading will occur at the next Huntington School Board meeting on Monday, August 24 at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.
