Installation of New Asphalt Playground Area Underway

A new 5,000 square foot asphalt playground area is being installed on the south side of Jack Abrams Intermediate School. Heavy machinery was at the site last Friday afternoon, as workers were busy excavating the area, delivering materials and moving the project right along.

The 50-by-100 foot area will include several adjacent drainage pools to handle storm water run-off and melting snow and ice. The district’s Building Improvement Fund will cover the $55,200 project, which was awarded to H & A Landscape following a competitive bidding process.

Excavation at the site created space for the installation of base material that will provide a stable foundation for a thick layer of asphalt. The district is confident the area will provide students with years of enjoyment. The work is expected to be completed by August 28.

“We are hoping to increase outdoor recreational opportunities during recess periods,” Superintendent John J. Finello said. “This new paved area will allow students to go outside and exercise when the adjacent fields are muddy or covered with snow.”

Unless temperatures are prohibitively cold, students are allowed to go outside during recess, providing the grounds aren’t blanketed by snow, ice or mud. Snow frequently melts more quickly on paved areas, and the asphalt could also be cleared by a snow blower, so students could utilize it and go outdoors rather than being restricted to classrooms for recess. It can also be used during the fall and spring for various recess games.

The project was previously approved by residents during a public vote. The funds to pay for the work already exist in the capital reserve account so no new monies are needed. The funds in the account are the result of economizing and tight fiscal management in all areas of district spending. The work will not require any borrowing, interest or tax increases.

In recent years the district has noticeably ramped up its wellness crusade, revamping menus and policies in an effort to promote good nutrition and healthy eating habits, as well as promoting vigorous exercise and outdoor recreational opportunities during recess periods.
