Trustees Approve Change Orders for Capital Projects

With numerous capital projects underway, Huntington School Board members approved a series of change orders related to work at J. Taylor Finley Middle School and Woodhull and Southdown schools.

At Finley, a major project to replace the school’s underground fuel storage tank is now complete. The new unit replaced one that had been in place since Finley opened in 1965. Trustees approved a change order in the amount of $5,650 for the project, reducing the original contract sum of $139,790 to $134,140.

Environmental Closures, Inc. of New Hyde Park performed the work at Finley. The original contract contained a $10,000 construction allowance. Of this amount, $4,350 was needed to provide piping modifications to an existing transition sump as per Suffolk County Health Department requirements. The balance of the allowance wasn’t needed, so trustees were able to approve the contract change order, reducing the final cost of the work.

A second change order was approved for a project involving the replacement of ceilings at Woodhull School. The “project is progressing fine,” said David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services. “It has come to our attention that when the ceiling fixtures in the hallways were removed, some of the wiring in the fixtures is deteriorated and that the diffusers cannot be replaced because of their age.”

The district asked the contractor for a price quote to replace the hallway lighting. A change order of $7,472.44 reflects these costs. “This is a capital reserve project and we have ample monies in this project to cover this charge,” Mr. Grackin told school trustees.

Still another change order involved the Southdown School public address system replacement project. That order, which amounts to $1,800, came about after Paul L. Rispoli, district director of facilities, determined there was a need to install the sound equipment rack in a different location in the building. “There is ample money left in the EXCEL funding to do this work,” Mr. Grackin said.

The original contract for the Southdown project amounted to $65,249. The change order increased the value of the contract to $67,049. Roland’s Electric, Inc. of Deer Park is doing the work.
