Southdown Trio Honored with Leadership Awards
Lindsay Saginaw, Mateo Alzate-Rodrigo and Marissa Gaal have all finished their studies at Southdown Primary School and are headed to their next educational adventure in September. But, the trio is still savoring the leadership awards they walked out the door with and will treasure always.
The Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance solicited nominations from its members for the fourth annual student leadership awards program. The purpose the award is to honor and promote excellence in physical activity.
Southdown physical education teachers Theresa E. Matthews and Christopher Taylor nominated the students for the award. Through their “positive attitude, behavior and performance,” the youngsters “demonstrated to your teachers that you have high personal standards and care about others,” organizers of the awards program told the trio.
“All three students are kind, caring and considerate of others and exhibit all the hallmarks of leadership: fair play, cooperation and teamwork,” Mrs. Matthews said. “We are extremely proud to be their physical education teachers.”
The Suffolk Zone held its annual awards night at Bay Shore High School. “You are the school leaders of today and the community, state and national leaders of tomorrow,” organizers told the honorees. “We are very proud of you. Be sure to take the time to thank those who help you along the way; your family and the teacher that nominated you for this honor.”
