Huntington Poets to be Honored on HART Buses
Let’s hope that Alyssa Crawley and Cristina Badalamenti aren’t the shy kind of teenagers. The two Huntington High School students were selected as winners in a Town of Huntington poetry contest that drew 166 entries. Their work will adorn HART busses as the vehicles make their way around the area.
Ms. Crawley is a junior in English teacher Ken Krummenacker’s honors class. Her poem, “In the Year of My Demise,” was written as an extra-credit assignment. “She is an energetic student with an incredibly quirky sense of humor,” Mr. Krummenacker said. “I personally love having her in my class. She brings a lot of energy to each lesson.”
“I entered my poem in the contest for extra credit and I didn’t think I would win,” Ms. Crawley said.
Ms. Badalamenti is a sophomore in English teacher Aimee Antorino’s honors class. Her poem, "Don't Let Judgment Take Over," was also written as an assignment for English class.
“I wrote the poem for class,” said Ms. Badalamenti, who is a member of the Blue Devil girls’ track program. “My poem is about people judging you for no reason, and how that changes from kindergarten all the way to high school. I was very proud of myself for being selected - and surprised.”
“This is a sensational honor and all of us in the district are very proud of Alyssa and Cristina,” Assistant Superintendent Joseph Giani said. “It’s exciting that residents all over town will be able to view these poems as the HART buses transport folks around Huntington.”
The two Huntington students will be among 10 honorees at an awards ceremony and poetry reading on April 29 at the Walt Whitman Birthplace in Melville.
