Jefferson School Parents Meet the Teachers

The excitement of a new school year could be felt at Jefferson Primary School as hundreds of parents turned out to meet their child’s teachers in what is always one of the most popular nights of the year.

The school was sparkling as parents found hallways and classrooms spotless but crammed full of student work and educational resources, including books, maps and various pieces of equipment to help facilitate learning.

“Meet the Teacher Night at Jefferson was a terrific success,” Principal Margaret H. Evers said. “Parents enjoyed getting a chance to listen to their child’s teacher introduce the curriculum for the year and to meet fellow parents.”

To kick-off the evening, Mrs. Evers addressed the overflow crowd jammed into the gymnasium, welcoming all who were new and thanking Jefferson’s veteran parents for being partners with the educators in their child’s education. In a twist, after the crowd applauded the faculty, it was the faculty’s turn “to stand and applaud the Jefferson parents for making Jefferson Primary a very special place,” the principal said.

While the opening weeks of a new school year are especially busy, Jefferson students spent time getting their classrooms and desks ready for their parents’ visit and teachers worked hard to create an interesting and informative overview of their plans for the year.

Classroom bulletin boards were decorated and displays of creative writing hung proudly in hallways, with special welcoming wishes. Children even made a point of cleaning their desks and completing a variety of special projects to welcome their parents when they arrived in classrooms.

In the classroom of first grade teachers Sharon Weider’s and Pattye Sweeney, students created paper reproductions of themselves. When the work was decorated and cut-out, the life-sized clones of the children were taped to their chairs and there they sat looking like they were ready to learn. Parents were surprised to find their “child” sitting at their desk waiting for them to arrive. The youngsters also left a hand written riddle on their desk describing themselves. The parents enjoyed walking around and looking for their “child.”

In other classes, desks were arranged with notes and poems for their parents. As in the past, the most difficult part of the night was when Mrs. Evers had to remind teachers and parents that the wonderful evening had drawn to a close.
