Weather Forces Huntington Homecoming Postponement

Pep rallyInclement weather forced the postponement of many of last weekend’s Huntington High School homecoming activities, including the annual festive parade through the heart of the village. The event has been rescheduled for next weekend, Oct. 3-4.

“After discussing this issue with student council officers and school personnel, it was decided that we would hold indoor activities and cancel the outdoor ones,” Principal Carmela Leonardi said. The decision was made during the day on Friday.

Students will now build parade floats this Friday night at the school between 6 p.m. and midnight. The homecoming parade, which will include the Blue Devil marching band, nominees for homecoming king and queen, cheerleaders, students, athletes, teachers, parents and administrators will kick-off at 12:45 p.m. and wind its way through the village to Huntington High School. The Blue Devil football team will take on cross-town rival Harborfields in a Suffolk Division III game at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Pep rallyDuring halftime of the game, the marching band will perform its 2008 field show and the winning class float and this year’s homecoming king and queen will be announced. “Homecoming is a memorable event for the students and their families,” Dr. Leonardi said. “We hope that these changes will only serve to lengthen the celebratory spirit that surrounds this event.”

Last Friday afternoon’s pep rally went on as scheduled in the gym as did a Saturday night dance that drew about 500 students. Huntington’s Class of 1988 held at 20th anniversary reunion on Saturday night as planned at Christopher’s Courtyard Café. However, rain and wind prevented students from building class floats Friday night and the parade down Main Street and up New York Avenue was also shelved.

Pep rallyThe parade will begin near the town parking lot opposite the U.S. Post Office on Gerard Street in Huntington village. Suffolk Police will close off the following roads during portions of the parade: Gerard Street near the parking lot between Green Street and West Neck Road; West Neck Road between Gerard Street and Main Street; Main Street between Gerard Street and New York Avenue; New York Avenue between Main Street and Holdsworth Drive and Holdsworth Drive between New York Avenue and Oakwood Road.

Should rain again prevent homecoming activities from taking place next weekend, the event will be held Oct. 17-18.
