Southdown School Students Make a Connection

Southdown ConnectionsSouthdown Primary School is comprised of hundreds of students spread over four different grades, but when you get right down to it, all of the youngsters are on the same team.  The children get along famously and they take an interest in one another.

Building on this tradition, Southdown’s “K-3 Connection” went into operation eight years ago.  Kindergarten teacher Lauren Wesnofske and third grade teacher Christine DePetris created the program, which fosters peer mentors.

“Although the initiative was designed to improve reading fluency, the outcomes have far exceeded that original expectation,” Principal Michelle Marino said. Students come together once a week for reading, projects and play. Together they problem solve, share, take turns and cooperate and learn from each other.

Southdown Connections“They truly become friends while building self esteem and patience,” Mrs. Marino said about the participating students. The kindergarteners learn a variety of skills and are encouraged to ask for help when they need it.

The first half of the year sees the third graders doing more of the writing and reading tasks while the second half witnesses the kindergarteners assuming more responsibilities.  It all unfolds in a relaxed, fun and friendly atmosphere.

"The best part is watching the friendships blossom,” Mrs. DePetris said. “It's such fun to receive some of the third graders who were the kindergarteners from the K-3 Connection three years ago. They get to participate again from the other side.  It's great!"
