Psychology Course Popular Among Huntington Students

Psychology continues to be one of the more popular courses at Huntington High School.  The interesting half-year, half-credit course is available to juniors and seniors and provides students with a taste of a discipline that many often choose to take up again on the college level.

Psychology meets daily for a full semester.  Eligibility to register for the course is limited to those who completed their 10th grade social studies class with a minimum grade of 80.  “This introductory course will deal with six basic units: learning and conditioning; memory and motivation; the human brain; perception and parapsychology, stages of human development; deviant behavior and therapy techniques,” according to the high school course bulletin.

Veteran teacher Debbie Haskins is scheduled to lead three class sections this year and colleague Peter Crugnale will pick up one fall section.  Department Director Joseph Leavy said that Ms. Haskins “has a great depth of knowledge in the subject and a high level of expectation for her students. Ms. Haskins is the senior-most member of the department with the greatest amount of content knowledge. Any Huntington High School student who has Ms. Haskins will learn a great deal."

Students assigned to Mr. Crugnale’s class can also expect to encounter a seasoned faculty hand.  “He is highly experienced in the course with many years under his belt as an instructor,” Mr. Leavy said. “He implements varied strategies for student learning including case studies."

In the course, students will experience lectures, experiments, guest speakers and a variety of audio-visual materials.  Requirements include a final exam.

Psychology is among eight electives offered by the Huntington High School Social Studies Department. There are plans to move toward offering AP Psychology in Sept. 2009, Mr. Leavy said.
