After School Academic Support Program on the Horizon
Hundreds of students will soon be involved in an after school academic support program in the Huntington School District as officials continue working toward putting all the pieces in place for the October 21 start date.
“It is wonderful that we can offer this district funded program,” Assistant Superintendent Barbara Lacey said. “I am positive that this extra support will help our students grow academically.”
The program will run for 54 sessions, through March 26. Principals will use a variety of academic tests and performance indicators to determine which students are invited to participate in the after school program.
At the primary school level, students will focus on English language arts and math skills during one hour sessions. The district is in the process of hiring four teachers at each building to lead the classes. Two teachers at each site will work with kindergarten youngsters and two will teach third graders. Three aides are also being hired to work in each primary school’s program.
At the intermediate grade level, support will be provided for social studies, English language arts and math. A dozen teachers in all are being hired to work at Jack Abrams and Woodhull intermediate schools or six at each site. Sessions will be one hour in length.
The seventh and eighth grade students selected for the program at J. Taylor Finley Middle School will be provided support in literacy and literacy content areas. Six teachers (three for each grade level) will work with the Finley students from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. on each of the 54 session dates.
After principals select students to participate in the program, parents will be notified and asked if they want their child to receive this extra support. “Since it is voluntary, some parents may not want their child participating,” Dr. Lacey said. Bus transportation will be provided to each of the students at the end of the day.
The district hopes to include about 20 students in each class section, but some groups might be smaller in the first weeks of the program. The teachers working the program will be paid $47.07 per hour.
