Blue Devil Football Set for Season Opener
The Huntington football team opens its season at East Hampton this Saturday at 2 p.m. Rookie head coach Ronald Wilson said that after several tough scrimmages, weeks of practice and some educated guesswork, senior Brian Ruggiero has won the starting quarterback job.
The Blue Devils will count on Ruggiero to help lead them to a successful rebuilding season. “He has shown that he can be a leader and has worked very industriously to show he has improved,” Wilson said.
Huntington’s backfield will include sophomore tailback Calvin Bollar and junior fullback Peter Knutson. Senior linemen Joe Brown and Nick Sammartano will be bolstered by sophomore Alex Gennaro, juniors Ricardo Caballero and Keith Smith and senior Cody Kirlew. Heading into the fall campaign, the team’s top receivers are expected to be seniors Josh Daves and Sean Whitney and juniors Thomas Grossman and Louie Lopez.
Due to the small roster size, many members of the Blue Devil offensive unit will be called on to serve double-duty. “These young men will also have to play on the other side of the ball,” Wilson said. “With the start of the school year, we hope to get some more players on the field.”
Wilson is hoping to get the season off to a successful start this Saturday and then take matters from there.
