Volunteer Mentors Needed for Huntington Science Research Students

The rejuvenated science research program at Huntington High School is looking for community residents with a scientific background to serve as volunteer mentors for students developing projects for regional and national competitions.

September and October have been designated “Research Scientist Months” at the school in an effort to jump start the program, said David Casamento, the district’s new director of science.  He is working closely with teacher Lori Pyzocha, who has taken over the science research program and is putting in place plans to bring it into the elite circle of such programs on Long Island, if not the state.

Mr. Casamento said local scientists interested in mentoring a research program student can either contact him (dcasamento@hufsd.edu) or Ms. Pyzocha (lpyzocha@hufsd.edu) for more information or to arrange a visit to meet with science faculty and research students.  “We will only be matching students and scientists with similar interests,” Mr. Casamento said.

“This year, the science research students will participate in numerous competitions including, but not limited to, the Intel and Siemens Science competitions,” Mr. Casamento said.  Since the Huntington community has a tradition of pitching in to help students grow academically, the school is hopeful that enough scientist-mentors will step forward for the research program to advance.

“Residents working in any science-related field or with a science-related background are encouraged to contact us,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said.
