Something for Everyone in Huntington’s Fall Adult Ed Program
The Huntington School District’s adult education program got its start in the 1950’s and today, more than a half-century later, it is becoming reinvigorated as it strives to meet the needs of district residents with lengthy list of interesting and informative courses and seminars.
Registration for fall semester classes is scheduled for this week (Sept. 9-10, 7-9 p.m. in the Huntington High School lobby). Classes will begin on Mon. Sept. 22. Courses run for eight week blocks, unless otherwise indicated in the fall bulletin. (If you miss the registration but would still like to participate, contact the program director at the phone number or e-mail address listed below.)
The line-up of courses includes Beginner’s Italian, Basketball for Men, Cooking with a Flair, Cooking with a Flair – Vegetarian, Golf for Beginners, Hatha Yoga, Intermediate Italian, Intermediate Spanish, Internet A to Z, Introduction to Computer Keyboarding, Introduction to Computers using Microsoft Office, Knitting, Marketing for Small Business, Microsoft Office Advanced, Painting, Preparation for Citizenship, Retirement Planning Today, Scrap-booking Crop, Indoor Soccer for Men, Indoor Soccer for Women, Social Ballroom Dance, Spanish for Beginners and Tai Chi Chi Kung. There are also free GED and ESL courses.
New seminars include Family CPR, Six Steps to Take for Increasing your Wealth While You Wait to Win the Lottery, Suddenly Single: A Case Study Approach and Universal First Aid for the Community.
Returning seminars include Getting Organized Financially, How to Improve Your Memory and Concentration!, How to Communicate More Effectively, How to Enjoy NYC Inexpensively and Imaginatively!, Seventy-five Great Ideas for Earning Extra Income and the always popular six-hour auto insurance reduction course.
Program Director Dr. Kenneth A. Card, Jr. is also open to new ideas for additional courses and he encourages suggestions from those who would like to take a specific class or teach one.
“We encourage all residents to become familiar with our adult education program and consider participating in it,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said.
Course tuition for district residents is $55 or $15 for senior citizens aged 60 and over (whenever space is available unless the course is marked “limited” or “special fee” in the course bulletin, which is posted on the district website.) Tuition for non-residents is $65. The program is self-sustaining in nature. Seminars have lower fees so the senior citizen discount doesn’t apply to those offerings.
