Registration Nears for Fall Driver Education Program

The Huntington School District’s fall driver education program will hold registration for Huntington High School seniors (Class of 2009) on Monday, Sept. 8 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Registration for all other students will be held the following two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 9 and Sept. 10 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. All of the registration sessions will be held in room 122 – the office of the director of physical education and athletics.

The program is open to any student who will be at least 16 years old by September 1 and who holds a valid learner’s permit, which must be presented the first day of class. There are 54 openings, which will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration fee is $500 for residents ($525 for non-residents). Checks should be made payable to: Huntington High School Driver Education Program.

An application for the program can be downloaded by logging onto the Huntington School District’s website at www.hufsd.edu and clicking on the Resources link, then on Driver Education and then on Forms & Files.

The course will run from Sept. 22 through Dec. 13. Lecture classes will be conducted Monday and Tuesdays. Students must attend both days. Road classes will be held Monday through Thursday and Saturdays. Students must attend one road class each week. The specific hours and days will depend on each student’s schedule. Individual schedules will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis on the day of registration.

Students may miss a total of three classes. However, these classes must be made up immediately. Once a student misses a fourth class, they will be dropped from the program and will be ineligible for a “blue card” (MV-285). Classes cannot be made up once a new semester has started. “Therefore, it is extremely important that a firm commitment be made as to a student’s attendance,” said Georgia D. McCarthy who directs the program.

Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the program. No refunds will be provided once the program has begun.

To be eligible for a “blue card” a student must satisfactorily complete 24 hours of lecture and 24 hours in the car during the fall program. Call 673-2018 for more information.
