Trustees Appoint New Jack Abrams School Dean

Longtime Huntington elementary school teacher Scott Armyn has been appointed dean at Jack Abrams Intermediate School. School Board members approved a change in assignment for Mr. Armyn while also granting him a one-year leave of absence from his current classroom position.

Mr. Armyn replaces former dean Lynn Winters, who left the district to become assistant principal at Elwood Middle School. “We wish Mr. Armyn good luck in his position and believe students, staff and parents will enjoy working with him” Superintendent John J. Finello said.

Trustees granted probationary faculty appointments to Woodhull School special education teacher Christopher Hender, Huntington High School bilingual science teacher Rosario Lorenzana, J. Taylor Finley Middle School social studies teacher Esmereldo Tello and Finley art teacher Julie Wright.

Trustees also took the following actions:

• Appointed Heather Spatafora (Jack Abrams School), Heather Barfuss (Jack Abrams School), Lauren Friedrich (Jack Abrams School) and Beth Minoff (Washington School) as long term substitute teachers through June 30, 2009. They will be covering the classes of two tenured teachers who have been granted leaves of absence.

• Recalled to their positions teacher aides Karen Beirne, Yvonne Dacosta, Karen Hempel and Elissa Melkonian and Flower Hill School teacher Kristen Kopf. They had been excessed from their positions last June, but subsequent vacancies necessitated their recall.

• Approved adjustments in the length of the work day for teacher aides Wanda Rivera-Wilson (Jefferson School), Vernay Harrison (Jefferson School), George Murphy (Southdown School) and Leticia Passmore (Finley Middle School).

• Appointed teacher aides Alison Moller (Flower Hill School) and Melissa Goldsborough (Jack Abrams School) and clerical worker Lorraine Brogan (special education, Finley Middle School).

• Added Denise Novello and Rosanna Caramonica to the substitute teacher list. They will be paid $90 per diem when they work.

• Hired Lindsey Fitzpatrick as a clerical worker assigned to Jack Abrams School.

• Appointed Peter Edwards as a long term substitute special education teacher at Washington School through Nov. 21.

• Appointed Carlos Arce Rodriquez as a long term substitute security guard through May 5, 2009. He will work at Huntington High School.
