Blue Devil Football Alumni Gather for Reunion
It might have been short notice, but about four dozen Huntington High School football alumni turned out for a reunion and fundraiser at Finnegan’s Restaurant & Tap Room. The group also included parents and family members of current and former players and friends of the program.
Display boards featuring Blue Devil football photos that stretched from the 1950’s to the present were a big hit with the crowd. Rookie Huntington head coach Ron Wilson labeled the evening “a very successful fundraiser” and said that “the funds that were raised will help offset the cost of player apparels and equipment.”
Wilson offered thanks to Finnegan’s and its manager, Tom Forte “for their generosity and for allowing us to host the event on their back patio and also to Sal Dez Italian Restaurant for their generous donation of pastas and bread.”
The reunion was thrown together just a few days before it was held, but word traveled fast and players from five different decades showed up. “We hope to make this an annual event,” Wilson said. Anyone interested in serving on a committee to plan the next event can contact Wilson through the athletic office by calling 673-2018 or by sending him an e-mail at rwilson@hufsd.edu.
Admission to the event was $50 and some sent a check even though they couldn’t attend due to prior commitments. Those who want to help support the program with a financial contribution can do so by sending a check in any amount made payable to Huntington Football and mailing it to Huntington Football c/o Huntington High School, Oakwood & McKay Roads, Huntington, NY 11731.
"Each of us will one day be judged by our standard of life, not by our standard of living; by our measure of giving, not by our measure of wealth; by our simple goodness, not by our seeming greatness," said Wilson, quoting William Arthur Ward.
Wilson is hoping for a huge turnout of alumni at the annual homecoming game scheduled for Sat. Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m. vs. Hauppauge.
