Construction of New Woodhull School Classrooms to Begin Soon

Construction of two additional classrooms at Woodhull Intermediate School will begin soon, according to Roger Smith of Burton Behrendt Smith, an architectural and engineering firm that provides services to the Huntington School District.

Bids for the project will be opened on Tues. Oct. 14.  The Huntington School Board has tentatively scheduled a special meeting on Fri. Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Jack Abrams Intermediate School to approve a bid award.  The first shovel should go into the ground not long afterward.  The work is expected to be completed no later than late January 2009.

Mr. Smith said that 30 contractors picked up bid packets for the project, indicating a high level of interest.  Last May, voters approved spending up to $850,000 to build the new rooms.  Mr. Smith said the State Education Department then took 20 weeks to approve the architectural plans.  The state will reimburse the district for a portion of the construction costs.

The project will be paid for out of the district’s Building Improvement Fund.  In June 2003, voters established the fund, also commonly referred to as the Capital Reserve Fund, to finance renovation and reconstruction projects.  The monies in the fund represent dollars already provided by taxpayers to the district, which because of tight fiscal management and economizing, weren’t needed to pay for regular school operation.
