Fall Athletic Turnout Strong at Huntington High School

Huntington High School athletic teams have seen good turnouts for the fall season.  The 19 teams are filled with 336 student-athletes according to a report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy.  Despite offering one less team than last year, overall participation is higher.

The eight boys’ teams have 166 participants and the 11 girls’ squads are filled with 170 athletes.  Junior varsity football has the largest roster with 41 players.  Varsity football has 31 players.  The two high school boys’ soccer teams have a combined 47 players while the girls’ teams are filled with 35 athletes.

There is healthy interest in the varsity and junior varsity girls’ tennis teams.  The two have a dozen players each, respectively.  The boys’ golf team consists of a squad of eleven.  The boys’ varsity and JV volleyball teams have a combined 22 players.

The high school field hockey program has 36 players on the two teams’ rosters, four more than last fall.  The girls’ volleyball program is populated by 25 athletes.  The varsity boys’ cross country team has a roster of eleven while the girls’ cross country squad is the smallest it has been in years, with just five runners.  Girls’ swimming has 28 student-athletes participating.  There are also 17 varsity cheerleaders.

With so many teams and so many students participating, space is at a premium both indoors and outdoors.  The athletic department has found it necessary to move some teams off-site for practices and games.
