Huntington to March against Breast Cancer
The Huntington High School community is planning to march against a scourge that continues to plague far too many Americans. The Fourth Annual Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15 from 3-5 p.m. on the school track.
Students, teachers, staff and local residents are being invited to circle the track during the event, which will also see the Huntington step team perform and participate. The event is sponsored by the Class of 2011 and organized by class advisor Lori Pyzocha along with school nurse Connie DeGrassi and step team advisor Yolanda Carey.
As a sign of hope and solidarity, many students and adults are expected to ask for strands of simulated pink hair to be added to their natural hair. The extensions can be purchased for $10 on the day of the walk. An adjacent bake sale will add to the fundraising effort. Monies raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
At past events, friends have walked arm-in-arm around the track. Many participants have often personalized the afternoon by telling others how breast cancer has touched a loved one.
“It’s a wonderful event that raises needed funds and heightens awareness,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said. “The energy and enthusiasm displayed in the past by students has been very inspiring.”
