Blue Devil Sports Briefs

The Huntington junior varsity soccer team dropped a tough game against Smithtown East, 3-1 before exploding offensively against Mount Sinai in 7-1 victory.  The Blue Devils are coached by Vincent Tannazzo.

Many members of the Huntington School District family ran in this year’s Great Cow Harbor 10-Kilometer Run.  School Board member Richard McGrath finished 39th out of 271 entries in the 50-54 year old age group and 570th overall in a time of 46.31.3.  His son, John, a sophomore at Huntington High School, crossed the finish line 34th out of 86 runners in the 13-19 year old age group or 890th overall in a time of 48.59.

Among the alumni who ran the race was 1959 Huntington graduate Jerry Asher, who finished in 1:05:25.3 or 64th in his age group (3,561st place overall).  He is 67 years old and each year tries to run his age.  Mr. Asher, who is a Suffolk District Court judge, is one of only five people who have run all 31 editions of the Cow Harbor 10K race.

Huntington assistant varsity boys’ track and field coach Travis Tate was one of the top finishers in the Cow Harbor race, placing 47th out of nearly 4,200 athletes that crossed the finish line.  The 31-year old covered the 6.2 mile course in a time of 46:47.8, good for fifth place out of 250 entries in his age group.

Holly Helstrom, a 15-year old Huntington High School sophomore, finished 13th out of 57 in her division in the Great Cow Harbor Run.  Ms. Helstrom raised $300 for the school’s Habitat for Humanity club by lining up sponsors for her effort in the race.  “She ran a remarkably quick time,” said Rob Gilmor, the club’s advisor and a dean at the high school.  “The Habitat club is gigantic this year and I am very hopeful that we will eventually build the house in Huntington.”  Mr. Gilmor was referring to the club’s goal of constructing a house in Huntington for a financially underprivileged family.

Kathryn Schmitz finished second in the three mile race to pace the Huntington girls’ cross country team in its first meet of the season at Sunken Meadow State Park.  Olivia Torres and Jillian Silverberg finished ninth and tenth, respectively.
In a tri-meet gainst Sachem North and Patchogue-Medford, Schmitz finished third and Jillian Silverberg and Gabriella Mitchell recorded personal best times.
