Construction of New Woodhull School Classrooms Begins

A construction project that will add much needed classroom space at Woodhull Intermediate School has begun as workers have started building instructional space onto the west side of the structure.  The district hopes the project will be finished by late January 2009 and students will be at their desks not long after.

At its October 17 meeting, the Huntington School Board awarded a contract to build the additional space to KEM Construction Corp. at a cost of $430,620.  The cost will be covered by the Capital Reserve Fund.  Voters approved an expenditure of up to $850,000 for the project, but bids came in much lower.

In the opening days of the project, a construction crew removed a large existing concrete slab and poured cement footings.  Workers have also removed the underside of the roof deck that covers the area.  That material will later be installed on the underside of the Woodhull awning which shelters parts of the sidewalk area in front of the building.

The ongoing work has required the removal of two existing window banks.  They will later be reinstalled in the two new classrooms that are being built.  School officials said they expect to have weekly meetings with the contractor and the district architect to help insure the project is completely in a timely fashion.
