Registration Ongoing for Blue Devil Summer Sports Camps

The Huntington Booster Club is sponsoring a series of summer sport camps for community youth. The camps will be led by members of the Blue Devil coaching staff. Camps will be offered for tennis, boys’ soccer, girls’ lacrosse, boys’ lacrosse, wrestling, field hockey and softball.

Copies of each camp’s brochure are available by logging onto the Huntington School District’s website at www.hufsd.edu. Click on the School Community link and then the Booster Club tab on the left side of the screen and then select Forms & Files.

The camp program includes:

Tennis

For the third consecutive summer, a tennis camp will be offered at Huntington High School. Students entering kindergarten through eighth grade are eligible to register. The camp will run from June 30 – July 3. Tuition is $99 per child.

Participants can register for one of two 90 minute sessions: 9 – 10:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The camp will utilize the six-court complex at the high school. Beginner to intermediate ability levels are welcome to attend. Each camper will receive a t-shirt.

Participants will be grouped according to their age and current level of ability. There will be conditioning drills, skill development stations, contests and games. The camp has been designed to help each participant develop the skills and confidence necessary to become a competitive tennis player. Each day a particular skill or stroke will be emphasized.

Mr. Fishlow is a Huntington High School physical education teacher and head coach of both the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams. He has coached both Suffolk and New York State champions during his long career and has more than two decades of experience working with young people of all ages.

Tennis rackets will be provided to those needing one for camp participation.

Boys’ Soccer

Two soccer camps for boys will be offered this summer on the fields at Huntington High School. The first session slated for July 21-25 is for boys entering grades 4-8 and a later session from August 18-22 is for those entering grades 9-12. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The registration fee is $115.

Blue Devil head coach John Pagano will serve as program director. Huntington assistant varsity coach Jason Suarez will also be on the staff. Participants will receive a free t-shirt. In case of rain, the camp will move indoors to the high school gym. There is a 10 percent sibling discount for families sending more than one camper.

All skill levels are welcome. The camp will feature technical training and a small player to coach ratio. There will be various competitions during the daily program, which will include ball skills, passing and dribbling, shooting, trapping, tournaments and games.

The second session is a new initiative. “As a new season approaches, we are committed to raising the bar and continuing to strengthen our boys’ soccer programs at Huntington High School,” Pagano said. “We are thrilled to offer a one-week preparatory camp to precede the 2008 season. Our focus will be squarely on both tactical as well as technical training and will serve as an excellent opportunity for both new and current players to get an important head start to the season.”

Girls’ Lacrosse

A summer girls’ lacrosse camp will be offered at Huntington High School for students entering grades 3-8. The session will run from June 30 through July 3 from 5 – 8 p.m. each day. Tuition is $115 for each participant and a 10 percent sibling discount is available.

The camp will offer a program for those ranging from beginners to players entering the junior varsity level. Participants will be taught solid fundamentals and techniques and develop the skills necessary for success.

Current Huntington varsity head coach Melissa D’Angelo will serve as program director. She has coached on the high school and college levels for 18 years and was inducted into the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2007. A graduate of SUNY College at Oneonta, D’Angelo was a four year varsity starter there. She was a U.S. Women’s Lacrosse Club national player from 1985 to 1990.

In case of rain, the camp will move indoors to the high school gym. Participants are required to bring goggles, a mouthpiece and a lacrosse stick each day. The camp will focus on both technical and tactical training and serve as an opportunity for new and current players to improve their game. Certified coaches will instruct participants.

Girls’ Basketball

Brad Reminick will lead a summer girls’ basketball camp at Huntington High School for students entering grades 4-9. The camp is slated for July 7-11 from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The registration fee is $115 and a ten percent sibling discount is available.

Reminick, who serves as Huntington’s head girls’ basketball coach, worked with several dozen budding players last summer. This year’s program will accommodate those ranging from beginners in the sport to players entering the junior varsity level.

The camp will include daily conditioning drills, skill development stations, contests and games. Players will be grouped based upon their age and ability. All participants will receive a camp t-shirt.

The camp will look to provide participants with a solid basketball foundation. The Blue Devil varsity team has won 27 of 28 league games over the past two years and the program has become one of the best on Long Island. Reminick hopes to keep it that way by developing the next generation of top players.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Two summer lacrosse camps are planned at Huntington High School for boys in the community who are interested in the sport. The camps will run July 14-17. Huntington varsity lacrosse coaches Paul McDermott and Eric Triolo will direct both camps. Participants will receive a t-shirt.

The camp for youngsters entering grades 3-6 will be held each day from 9 a.m. to noon. The registration fee is $115 and there is a 10 percent discount for siblings. All aspects of lacrosse will be covered, including scooping, dodging, strong and weak hand drills, passing, fast breaks, shooting techniques, footwork, clearing, positioning, pick and rolls and stick protection. Instructional games will also be held.

A second camp for students entering grades 7-9 will be held each night (July 14-17) from 5 – 7 p.m. The shorter session will cost $99 per camper with the same 10 percent sibling discount available. The evening program will cover the same ground as the daytime camp.

The goal of both camps “is to improve individual skill level and develop a fundamental understanding of basic lacrosse,” according to the camp brochures. Both camps will begin with stretching and agility drills, along with line drills and four corner passing. In case of rain, the camp will be held in the high school gym.

Participants need to bring a helmet, mouthpiece, shoulder and arm pads, a glove and a stick each day.

Field Hockey

A girls’ field hockey camp is planned for July 21-25 from 5 – 8 p.m. on the synthetic turf field at Huntington High School. Registration is $115 per child and there is a 10 percent sibling discount available.

The camp is open to girls entering grades 3-8. It will be directed by Blue Devil head varsity coach Jillian Talleur, who has coached at the school since 2004. Ms. Talleur obtained her undergraduate degree at SUNY College at Cortland and earned a Master’s degree at Brooklyn College. She teaches physical education and health at Long Island City High School in Queens.

The camp will feature skill instruction in dribbling, dodging, footwork and offense/defense. There will also be 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 games and competitions and larger group games and tournaments. The high school gym has been reserved for the camp in case of inclement weather.

“This is a great opportunity to practice new skills and will be enjoyable for everyone,” according to the camp brochure. “The camp will be divided among different age and ability levels, providing challenging activities and competition for all who attend. Stick work and small team games will be used to stress the concepts and skills necessary to become a better field hockey player.” Camp staff will be comprised of former Blue Devil varsity players.

Wrestling

Hall of Fame coach Lou Giani will share the secrets of his success at a one-week summer wrestling camp from Monday, July 21 through Friday, July 25 on the sprawling campus of J. Taylor Finley Middle School located on Greenlawn Road in Huntington.

The camp, which is open to students in fifth through ninth grades, has been designed to help wrestlers reach their goals on the mat. Giani and his staff intend to teach participants how to train and how to peak for the so-called “big match.” The camp aims to teach the wrestlers how to become champions in a relaxing and fun-filled atmosphere.

The camp will kick-off each morning at 9:30 with a group session followed by technique presentations from 10:00 to 11:30 and scrimmaging from 11:30 to 1 p.m. A lunch break will run from 1:00 to 1:30 followed by hard wrestling and instruction, as needed, from 1:30 to 3:00. The camp is limited to the first 60 student-athletes who register. All will receive a complimentary tee-shirt.

Tuition for the camp is set at $180. The invited staff includes some of the biggest names in Long Island wrestling history. Giani has been running camps for decades and is a master at working with young wrestlers and being able to quickly focus on their strengths and weaknesses to maximize their potential.

Giani is a Pan Am Games gold medalist and 1960 Olympian. His teams have amassed a record of 436-36-1 with 23 individual state champions and nine Suffolk team titles.

Softball

There will be a new summer activity in town this July for girls entering grades 4-9. A softball camp will be offered at Huntington High School from July 14 – 18 from 5 – 8 p.m. The registration fee is $115 per children and siblings get a 10 percent discount.

Blue Devil varsity coach Krystle Canino will serve as program director. If it rains, camp activities will move indoors to the high school gym. The goal of the camp is to improve individual skill levels and develop a fundamental understanding of softball.

According to the camp brochure, “Players will be grouped by age and ability. Campers will participate in daily conditioning drills, skill development stations, contests and games. This program is devoted to helping players build the necessary skills and confidence it takes to be a competitive softball player.”

Enrollment is limited. Each camper receives a t-shirt with their registration. “This is a great opportunity for each athlete to enhance their individual skills as well as have some fun playing fast-pitch softball this summer,” according to the brochure. “We will also be working on advanced skills such as sliding, diving, slapping and pitching and catching.”
