Huntington Boys’ Track Turns the Tables on Sayville
It just keeps getting better for the Huntington boys’ track and field team. The Blue Devils turned back powerful Sayville, 77-64 to clinch at least a share of the Suffolk League V crown. The team will attempt to win the title outright this week.
Head coach Ron Wilson said it’s been the team’s goal all along to finish the season undefeated and win the league championship. The win over Sayville was sweet since the Golden Flashes have been the Blue Devils’ nemesis for several years.
Last year Sayville nipped Huntington by a handful of points to deny the Blue Devils the league title. That was then; this is now. Wilson took over the program this year from retired veteran coach Dennis Coach, and the rookie hasn’t missed a step so far.
Just like they have for most of the season, Huntington’s relay teams carried the Blue Devils to another victory. The 4 x 400m (Chris Glaser, David Acton, Brian Cotter, and Stevens Merilan) and the 4 x 100m (Josh Daves, Jake Gayle, Quillian Respass and Emmanuel Dume) swept past Sayville and elicited cheers from the home crowd.
Huntington is humming right along. Fritz Barreau continues to be undefeated in the shot put. He has yet to lose in a dual meet. The 4 x 100m relay team is also undefeated in the league. Against Sayville, Stevens Merilan and David Acton both ran their personal best in the 400m dash, Merilan in 52.5 seconds and Acton in 53.3, finishing first and second, respectively.
Walter Stephens won both the high jump (5’10) and triple jump (41’), Josh Daves took the long jump (20’4), Eddie Santos was tops in discus (135’5) and Chris Glaser captured the 400m IH in 1:02.3.
Wilson is pushing the Blue Devils toward the season’s finish line and what he hopes will be glory.
