Blue Devil Sports Briefs

Huntington junior Julie Forster has continued her ascent as one of the top high school athletes in the state.  In addition to turning in a very fine season with the Blue Devil soccer team and an All-State performance in basketball, she is playing a key role on the lacrosse team this spring.

In her spare time, Forster plays on the Long Island Lighting AAU team coached by Neil Simmons.  The team is based on LI but its schedule will take players to tournaments in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Connecticut and Rhode Island, as well as the nationals in Lake Buena Vista, Florida and the junior nationals in Washington, D.C.

Despite the hectic schedule and the work associated with keeping a high academic average, Forster is reportedly “loving every minute” of her activity-packed life.

The Huntington junior varsity boys’ tennis team lost a heartbreaking meet against Northport, 4-3.  Sophomore Matt Rubin coasted in fourth singles, winning 6-1, 6-0.  Dan Rabinowitz and Steven Inman captured a three set thriller in second doubles, winning the first set, 7-5, before dropping the second 3-6.  The pair then won a 10-8 tie-breaker to grab the decisive third set.  Cole Peters and Michael Valente took third doubles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

One day earlier against John Glenn, Rubin was the sole Blue Devil winner, taking fourth singles, 7-5, 6-4.

The Kings Park baseball team turned back Huntington, 13-9.  The Blue Devils trailed throughout the game, but did manage to rally for seven big runs in the top half of the seventh, and last, inning.  Nick Sammartano blasted a homerun in the game.

The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team defeated Mercy, 15-4 behind sophomore Jack Dever’s five goals.  Huntington led 10-2 at halftime.  Steve Mock scored three times and Pat Wright, John McCallen and Peter Knutson had two goals each, respectively.  Brian Ruggiero also scored.  Mock added five assists and Kevin Bilzi notched three assists.  Goalies Mark Salerno and Derrick Northcote combined to record ten saves.

Senior Casey Scully notched six goals but it wasn’t enough as the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team fell to Sayville, 17-15.  The Blue Devils trailed at halftime, 10-5 but mounted a second half comeback that saw the team outscore the Golden Flashes, 10-7.

In addition to Scully scoring frenzy, Katherine Thompson found the back of the net four times, Matte Scully scored twice and Allison Thompson, Molly Barnett and Michaela Brown tallied put the ball between the posts one time each, respectively.
Allison Thompson, Michaela Acton, Brown and Barnett also recorded assists.  Goalie Karly Kocis had five saves and Matte Scully made one save in the net.

Kings Park used a late game rally to overcome the Huntington baseball team, 9-7.  The Kingsmen pushed six runs across the plate in a long sixth inning to snatch the win away from the Blue Devils.

In one of the lowest scoring games in memory, the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team edged Babylon, 5-2.  The Blue Devils built a 4-2 lead by halftime.  Only one second half goal was scored in the game.

Jack Dever scored twice for Huntington, who also received goals from Pat Wright, Steve Mock and John McCallen.  Wright added two assists and Kevin Bilzi and Mock chipped in with one apiece.  Mark Salerno stopped six shots in goal.
