Wireless Access Now Reality at Huntington High School
After several months of planning and then several days of on-site work, wireless computer access is now available in the instructional wings at Huntington High School and even in the area of the auditorium stage.
The only areas not covered by the project are the art wing, basement and gymnasium. “We will be rolling out another 24-station wireless cart, which staff will have to sign out,” Assistant Superintendent David H. Grackin said. The new cart and computers will be added to the existing equipment already in use at the school.
The new wireless access is expected to greatly enhance the ability of students to use school laptop computers brought into their rooms on carts by teachers. Before such technology allowed for this type of in-room activity, teachers would have to march their students to other areas in the school where dedicated computer rooms featured fixed desktop computers.
“This new access will be much more educationally efficient, save the time it took to go from room-to-room and allow an entire class of students to use computers in their regular classroom where they can also use other materials normally stored in the room,” Mr. Grackin said.
Teachers can also request to utilize wireless access for their personal laptops. Such access will not be automatic. Following administrative authorization, computer technicians will make the necessary arrangements. Teachers will be able to use computers for lessons and planning.
Mr. Grackin said the district utilized the services of Western Suffolk BOCES to complete the wireless project thus making Huntington eligible to be reimbursed for a portion of the costs through the state aid program.
