State Tells District to Wait Nine Months for Reimbursement
The Huntington School District has been told it will have to wait as long as nine months to receive full reimbursement for the state’s share of 2007 summer handicapped program expenditures, which amounted to $523,000.
The State Education Department’s School Financial Aid Office notified Huntington officials by letter that at this time it is only prepared to reimburse the district for 26 percent of the handicapped program’s cost. The state’s share is 80 percent.
District officials said the news was unsettling and called the move another unfunded mandate. David H. Grackin, Huntington’s assistant superintendent for finance, said the district’s general fund must now carry these costs until the special aid fund payment arrives.
