Flower Hill Flat Stanleys Travel the Country
Flower Hill Primary School first graders are thrilled to see the results of a recent project making their way across the country, and maybe around the world. The experience has captivated the youngsters’ interest and formed the gateway for many interesting lessons.
“The book, ‘Flat Stanley’ is about a little boy whose bulletin board falls on him and flattens him during the night,” explained Suzanne Knoerzer, a first grade teacher at the school. “He has a number of adventures while flat, including being sent in an envelope to visit friends in another state. This is the basis of the ‘Flat Stanley Project’ in which school children create ‘flat Stanleys to send to friends and relatives around the world.”
Flat Stanleys are in reality pictures created by school children of the Stanley Lambchop character from the book. Schools participating in the project connect with each other. The Flower Hill youngsters love seeing photos of all the places where their creations have traveled. Casey Smith, who is a student in Ms. Knoerzer’s class, sent her Flat Stanley to her uncle Tony, who took “him” on a trip to North Carolina. On a stop at a museum in Washington, D.C., Casey's Flat Stanley met up with a Flat Stanley visiting from Texas,” Ms. Knoerzer said. “Uncle Tony” who is formally Tony Forte, took a picture of the two Flat Stanleys together and snapped several other photos before sending them to Flower Hill. In addition to North Carolina and the nation’s capital, the Ms. Smith’s creation has also spent time in Tennessee and Virginia.
“The children look forward to receiving their Flat Stanleys from all corners of the world,” Ms. Knoerzer said.
