Blue Devil Sports Roundup
The Huntington junior varsity tennis team nipped Walt Whitman on a cold, overcast day last Friday afternoon, 4-3. The doubles team of Taylor Fritts and Michael Valente put the Blue Devils over the top, winning 10-7. With the threat of rain looming, the teams agreed to play 10-game “pro-sets” to help speed things along. Earlier in the meet, Huntington’s Andrew Neter (10-6) and Peter Wagner (10-3) won in singles play and the team of David Stillman and Cole Peters grabbed victory in second doubles, 10-6.
The Blue Devil boys’ lacrosse team turned back West Babylon in double overtime, 13-12. Junior Steve Mock scored the game winning goal with about two minutes remaining in the game. Huntington trailed at halftime, 7-3, before staging a second half rally. Patrick Brady tied the game with less than a minute left in regulation.
Mock led the Blue Devils with four goals. Andrew Brohel scored three times, Brady and Patrick Wright each found the back of twice, respectively, and Kevin Bilzi and John McCallen scored one goal apiece. Mock (two) and Brian Ruggiero combined to notch three assists. Senior Mark Salerno stopped 21 shots in goal.
The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team dropped the first game of the season, losing to Wantagh, 15-6. The Blue Devils trailed at halftime, 8-4 and never managed to make up the difference.
Matte Scully led Huntington with two goals. Casey Scully, Katherine Thompson, Hannah Helstrom and Michaela Acton each scored once, respectively. Casey Scully, Borwn and Allison Thompson also picked up one assist apiece. Karly Kocis recorded seven saves in goal for the Blue Devils.
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team lost a tough game to Smithtown East, 7-5. The Blue Devils fell behind early and despite three second quarter goals, still trailed at halftime, 5-3. Steve Mock led Huntington with two goals and an assist. Andrew Brohel scored a goal and added an assist and John McCallen and Patrick Brady also found the back of the cage for the Blue Devils. Mark Salerno stopped four shots in the net.
In the first junior varsity boys’ tennis meet of the spring, Huntington was nipped by Harborfields, 4-3. The Blue Devils were led by Peter Wagner, who won 6-2, 7-5 in fourth singles. In first doubles, Matt Rubin and Dan Rabinowitz won an exciting three set match, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-3 and David Stillman and Michael Valente took their second doubles match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
In the first five games of the season, former Blue Devil lacrosse great Austin Carino scored 13 goals and tallied one assist for New York Institute of Technology (5-0). Carino has also scooped up 11 ground balls and turned the ball over only one time. He’s managed to launch 22 shots on goal, second highest on the team.
Carino scored a college career-high six goals in a 20-9 victory over Seton Hill University of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. NYIT is ranked second in NCAA Division II.
Huntington’s Jill Beck has played in each of the Iona College lacrosse team’s first five games, starting two. Beck, a 5’7 junior attack, has two shots on goal and has drawn a defensive charge. She is majoring in biology/pre-physical therapy. Iona has struggled in the opening weeks of the season, going 0-5.
Blue Devil lacrosse alum John Henry McNierney is a 5’8 sophomore on the Lehigh University team this spring. The former Huntington star has played in six of the first nine games and started one. McNierney, who is majoring in business, has recorded four goals for Lehigh (4-5), picked up three ground balls and turned the ball over only once. He has six shots on goal.
Erin Coffey is a 5’8 junior on the Quinnipiac University women’s lacrosse team this spring. One of the team’s defensive anchors, the former Huntington High School great has scooped up nine ground balls, drawn six defensive charges and forced six turnovers. She is started all five games for Quinnipiac (2-3). Coffey recently played all 60 minutes of the game in a 13-10 loss at home to Harvard.
The Huntington girls’ softball team took a six run lead into the final inning but Half Hollow Hills East rallied for seven runs to nip the Blue Devils, 7-6.
