March Madness at Faculty and Staff Game

The high school boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons are over, but Louis D. Giani Gymnasium was still packed to the rafters as faculty and staff teams from Woodhull and Huntington Intermediate schools battled each other for Huntington School District bragging rights.

Players on each team took time to practice in the days leading up to the big game and engaged in extensive warm-ups prior to the start of action. Bleachers on both sides of the court quickly filled with students, parents and colleagues. The scene echoed a playoff-type atmosphere and was the talk in hallways at each school all day.

“The students from both schools are the beneficiaries of the money collected,” Woodhull Principal Kenneth A. Card, Jr. said. “Last year we used the money here at Woodhull to purchase recess equipment for the kids.  We also purchased basketballs, kick balls, soccer balls, and footballs for every class.  The plan this year is to use the monies raised to purchase indoor recess games and for school beautification projects.”

Huntington Intermediate School will use its proceeds from the game for various playground enhancements. The gym took on a festive air throughout the night.

Billed as “March Madness,” the game produced plenty of excitement with Woodhull winning by a point at the buzzer. Refreshments and raffles were sold throughout the evening. Plenty of faculty and staff were seen walking gingerly down hallways in the days following the game, nursing sore muscles.
